Paralimni was built on the shores of a shallow lake, hence its name in Greek meaning 'settlement by the lake'. The area of Paralimni combines natural beauty with tourist attractions and one of them is the ancient city-state of Leukolla (today’s Protaras), dating back to 306 B.C., related  to one of the successors of Alexander the Great. Next to Paralimni is Dherinia village, where one can find the ruins of the famous city of Famagusta, which was so abruptly abandoned after 1974.  Paralimni is also famous for its rich red soil and picturesque windmills - used to draw water from underground aquifers to irrigate the surrounding land, but today they are left only as sights.
